An Approved ('A') stallion is one which:

a. has successfully completed a Stallion Performance Test in Holland or North America.

b. has had offspring evaluated and found to be of sufficient quality.

c. has been Licensed and has fulfilled all sport requirements, but has yet to fulfill the offspring requirements.

Stallions with exceptional sport records (i.e. international level), or with offspring demonstrating exceptional success at high levels in sport may, upon application to the KWPN, have the sport requirements waived, and may be granted Approved (‘A’) status immediately upon granting of a Breeding License at a KWPN keuring. All other requirements (successful presentation at a KWPN keuring and subsequent offspring evaluations) must be met. These rare exceptions are discretionary, and no explanation will be given, in any case.
A Licensed ('L') stallion is one which:

a. has been presented at a KWPN-NA Keuring in-hand and under saddle, and has demonstrated highest quality.

b. has undergone veterinary (physical, endoscopic, semen and radiographic) evaluation and has been blood typed.

The standard of acceptance for Licensed stallion is exactly the same as that for 'A' stallions.

A Registered ('R') stallion is one which:

a. has not been presented at a KWPN Stallion Selection or Keuring.

b. has not been selected at a KWPN Stallion Selection or Keuring.

c. was accepted in Holland but did not pass the 100 Stallion Performance Test.

d. was once Approved or Licensed for breeding, but has had the breeding authorization withdrawn (for non-fulfillment of sport requirements, poor offspring, etc.)

Registered stallions - stallions not Approved or Licensed for Breeding - are not featured in the KWPN-NA Stallion Directory and Handbook, or listed by name in KWPN-NA advertising. A list of verified Registered stallions is published in the directory. The KWPN-NA office will compile factual information and owner information that will be sent to breeders upon request.

An Acknowledged Studbook Approved stallion Accredited by the KWPN ('ASA KWPN Ac')stallion:

is a stallion Approved by an Acknowledged Studbook which has, in addition, met the same standards for soundness and performance as KWPN Approved and Licensed stallions. Foals by these stallions out of some KWPN registered mare may be eligible for registration. Pre-approval is required. See Registration Possibilities and contact the KWPN-NA office.

Sport Requirements:

Stallions which have successfully completed the presentation and received Licensed status are eligible for Approved (‘A’) status by fulfilling sport requirements. Three year old stallions must complete sport requirements within 3 1/2 years and four year old and older stallions must complete sport requirements within 2 1/2 years. Sport requirements may be fulfilled in either of two ways.

a. Successful completion of a KWPN approved performance test within 2 1/2 years of licensing.
Scores will be individually evaluated by the KWPN. A minimum of 110 points (or 120 points in either discipline) must be scored in order to be eligible for evaluation.

Currently, one performance test in North America is approved by the KWPN - the 100 Day Stallion Performance Test sponsored by the Federation of North American Sporthorse Registries and co-managed by the International Sporthorse Registry and the American Hanoverian Society. Owners of stallions which have completed previous North American 100 day tests, or European stallion performance tests, may submit group and individual final scores, number of horses competing and average scores of all horses competing, and judge’s names and comments. In either case, successful completion will be decided by the KWPN keuring jury. The Stallion Performance Test fulfills sport requirements only for stallions Licensed through the keuring procedure either before or after the performance testing.

b. Successful competition in one of the three FEI disciplines of Dressage, Jumping or Combined Training
as follows:

Dressage: four scores of 60% at 4th Level Test 3 or above from four different USA Eq I or FEI judges at USA Eq recognized shows or the Canadian equivalent.

Combined Training: Intermediate Level with a score of not more than 72.5 penalty points at two or more competitions recognized by USA Eq and USEA or the Canadian equivalent.

Jumping: four clear rounds at four major shows over courses at least 4’6" in height.

When a Licensed stallion successfully completes sport requirements, he will be designated as an Approved (‘A’) stallion. If the stallion does not fulfill the sport requirements within four years (beginning the year after the licensing), the License will be withdrawn, and the stallion will be designated ‘R’ until the requirements are met.

Beginning with stallions Approved in 2002: All stallions, whether Approved in North America or the Netherlands, must submit proof of competition at the above level within 4 years after Approval. This performance requirement is in addition to the successful completion of a stallion performance test.

Offspring Inspection:

In order to maintain the Approved status, an inspection of the stallion’s offspring is required.

a. A minimum of 10 different offspring, any age, must be presented for Premium Grading during the 4 years following issuance of breeding license (beginning the year after issuance of license). Their dams must be previously inspected, or must be inspected by the KWPN within the 4 year period (but need not necessarily be presented with the offspring).

An extension of 3 years may be applied for, in the event that the above requirements cannot be met within 4 years, however the stallion will revert to Licensed (‘L’) status at the end of 4 years until the requirement is met, or until 7 years have elapsed.

New! A formal offspring evaluation be written by the keuring jury and published when the 10 offspring have been inspected.

b. A minimum of 10 offspring must have been successfully presented for Studbook inspection within 7 years following licensing (starting the year after issuance of license).

c. The total minimum number of offspring to be seen within the 7 year period is 10. If only 10 are presented, all must be 3 or older, and the dams of all must have been inspected by the KWPN jury.

d. If more than 10 different offspring are presented, the same offspring may be presented twice if presented once when under age 3, and once when 3 or older.

e. Not more than 3 offspring out of the same mare may be considered for stallion evaluation.

f. The jury will evaluate the influence of the stallion relative to the influence of the mare on the basis of the offspring presented, to determine whether the stallion appears to transmit sufficient quality to the offspring to retain ‘A’ status.

If both parts are not fulfilled within 7 years, the stallion reverts to Registered (‘R’) status until offspring requirements are fulfilled. At any future time, if the requirements of the offspring evaluation are fulfilled, the stallion will be again granted the ‘A’ status.

At any time, Licensed or Approved Designation may be withdrawn by the KWPN.
