KWPN-NA Registration Possibilities


Beginning with the 2002 breeding season, the KWPN-NA adopted the same registration format as the KWPN. Register A and B were added and Auxiliary Foalbook and Auxiliary Studbook will be phased out. In addition to making the KWPN-NA registration possibilities exactly the same as those in the Netherlands, the new rules are far more simple and straightforward (see chart and explanations on below). All registration fees include lifetime recording with Performance Horse Registry.

Foalbook (Offspring labeled 'FB' on Registration Chart)


In general, foals by Approved stallions, KWPN Accredited Acknowledged Studbook Stallions and Accredited Thoroughbred stallions out of FB, STB, Register A, XFB, XSB, Register B, Accredited Thoroughbred and Acknowledged Studbook mares are eligible for registration in the main foalbook.

Register A (Offspring labeled 'Reg A' on Registration Chart)


In general, foals by an activated Licensed or Acknowledged Studbook Approved stallion (not KWPN accredited) out of FB, STB, Register A, XFB, XSB, Register B, Accredited Thoroughbred, Thoroughbred and Acknowledged studbook mares are eligible for registration in the Register A. Foals by an Approved stallion out of a non accredited Thoroughbred mare will also be eligible for Register A.

Register A foals can enter foalbook premium grading classes. To be inscribed into the Studbook, veterinary (radiographs and endoscopy) and/or performance requirements not completed by the sire must be fulfilled by the offspring (contact office for requirements).

Offspring of Register A mares will have the same registration possibilities as offspring of Studbook mares. Register A Stallion candidates can be presented for Licensing at three years or older. but cannot be activated for breeding as Registered stallions.

Register B (Offspring labeled 'Reg B' on Registration Chart


Sporthorse foals not fitting into either of the above groups may be entered into Register B. In general, foals by an activated Registered (FB) stallion out of FB, STB, Register A, XFB, XSB, Register B, Accredited Thoroughbred, Thoroughbred and Acknowledged Studbook mares are eligible for registration in the Register B. Foals by an Unaccredited Thoroughbred stallion out of FB, STB, Register A, XFB, XSB and Reg. B. mares are also eligible for Register B.

Register B foals cannot enter premium grading classes. Register B foals cannot advance to Register A, Foalbook or Studbook unless the registration status of the sire or dam changes.

Certificate of Pedigree (Offspring labeled 'CP' on Registration Chart)


In general, any foal by an activated KWPN stallion and out of a non-sporthorse mare or by a non-sporthorse stallion out of a KWPN mare, and which is not eligible for registration in the categories above, is eligible for a Certificate of Pedigree. Any cross yielding more than 7/8's Thoroughbred is eligible for Certificate of Pedigree only.

A Certificate of Pedigree is a birth certificate, NOT a registration paper. Certificate of Pedigree foals cannot enter premium grading classes. Certificate of Pedigree foals cannot advance to Register A, Foalbook or Studbook.

'ASA' Registrations (Offspring of stallions labeled 'ASA KWPN Ac' on Registration Chart)


Some foals out of KWPN Registered Mares by stallions Approved by an Acknowledged Studbook and Accredited by the KWPN are eligible for registration

All breedings of KWPN approved mares to ASA KWPN Ac Stallions must be pre-approved by the KWPN breeding director. Application to the KWPN-NA office, in writing, should be made in advance of the breeding season, and should include the pedigrees of both the mare and the stallion. No registration possibilities are guaranteed without prior approval.

Keuring Class Changes


Auxiliary Studbook. Classes for Auxiliary Studbook mares will not be offered after 2007.
Auxiliary Foalbook premium grading classes will not be offered after 2005. 
Certificate of Pedigree Mares will not be eligible for inspection after 2007. 

 

 

 

 

Acknowledged Studbooks: 


An Acknowledged Studbook is a European warmblood sporthorse registry, recognized by the KWPN, including but not limited to the following: Belgian (BWP), Danish, Selle Francais (SF), Westfalen (WEST), Trakehner (TRAK), Holsteiner (HOL), German Oldenburg (OLD), Swedish (ZW), Hannoverian (HAN). KWPN Acknowledged Studbooks

Unacknowledged Studbooks:
All other warmblood breeds or crosses. For example: American Warmblood Society, American Warmblood Registry, Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association, International Sporthorse Registry, Polish Trakehner, Rheinland Pfalz-Saar. 

Non-sporthorse breeds or crosses:
Appaloosa, Arabian, Belgian Draft, other Draft, Morgan, Paint/Pinto, Quarter Horse, Standardbred, Saddlebred, Lippizan, Non-registered.

Mares: Acknowledged Studbook Registered (ASR): 


A mare which has been inspected and inscribed in the main studbook of her birth European warmblood sporthorse registry. Mares registered with the American Hanoverian Society, American Holsteiner Horse Association, American Trakehner Association, North American Trakehner Association, Dutch Riding Horse and Pony Studbook (NRPS), Oldenburg NA, Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society Department NA as well as the above listed registries, MAY or MAY NOT qualify as Acknowledged Studbook Registered mares depending on individual pedigree.

Stallions: Acknowledged Studbook Approved (ASA N Ac) not Accredited by the KWPN:


A stallion which has been fully approved for breeding, including performance testing, by an Acknowledged Studbook registry. 

Acknowledged Studbook Approved (ASA KWPN Ac) stallions Accredited by the KWPN: 
As of 1995, ASA stallions must meet the same standards for soundness and performance as KWPN Approved and Licensed stallions. A veterinary exam including radiographs, endoscopic exam and semen evaluation will be required; and the results of the Performance Test or sport results will be evaluated on an individual basis. A list of stallions Accredited by the KWPN is available from the KWPN-NA Office.

Unacknowledged Studbooks:


All other warmblood breeds or crosses. For example: International Sporthorse Registry, Polish Trakehner, Rhinelander, Rheinland Pfalz-Saar, American Warmbloods, Canadian Warmbloods. 

Non-sporthorse breeds or crosses:
Appaloosa, Arabian, Belgian Draft, other Draft, Morgan, Paint/Pinto, Quarter Horse, Standardbred, Saddlebred, Lippizan, Non-registered.

Dual Registration

Dual registration is not allowed under the rules of the World Breeding Federation of Sport Horses. The KWPN-NA will not knowingly issue a second set of registration papers on any horse previously registered or on any foal on which registration has already been initiated with another registry.
